So many of my decorating appointments are about coloring the rooms my clients want to change. I find that most clients are afraid of color! Color in fabrics they can use, color of their walls and ceiling and trim and furniture. It is such a joy when I visit a client and their mind is open to colors other than neutrals. We both have a lot of fun. Colors and textures make their rooms so much more interesting to themselves and to their visitors. When we look outdoors at our landscapes, we all enjoy the flowers, green bushes and trees, sky, clouds, sunsets, the shapes and textures of all of those things and more. Why do so many people fear bringing those wonderful visual treats into their homes? All the artistic shapes in the printed fabrics are perfect to wrap a color scheme around, using the colors in the prints you love then is perfect. When you try to pick colors out of thin air, that is where the confusion comes in and so neutral is what you end up with out of fear to fully express yourself and not executing a color plan. I create color plans to make it easy to select exciting, fabulous interiors. My new e-book is an example and should be online soon. Joan from www.DazzlingInteriorDesign.com

My clients in southern california were planning their wedding at their 2000 sq. ft. newly built home. I arrived at the address on a warm saturday only to find packing boxes and too much “his” and “hers” furniture piled up in the living and family room. The groom was gone on a 10 day fishing trip he planned long ago. After talking to the bride to be, I removed my jacket, rolled up my sleeves and said “we have no time to waste!” The wedding was scheduled to take place in the living room here in 30 days!

She and I moved boxes and rearranged furniture to fit into nice easy conversation groupings. (compelling guests to come in and sit down, very important) Many of the extra furniture pieces were removed to the garage for donation. I had to decide on a color scheme right away. My bride had stitched together a patchwork quilt- like wall hanging she had hung over the fireplace. The colors and patterns were unusual and unique: rusts, maroons, and deep golds. Rather avante garde looking. That had to be the color scheme! She had hung it up in an important focal point place, too. Another clue! Designers need to notice things that identify a clients uniqueness and express that in the decorating scheme.

The sofa and chaise were off white (thank goodness) . I could not plan the color scheme without first creating a great furniture placement. We selected silk fabric for pillows in solid rusts, maroons and golds. I reupholstered 2 open arm french chairs in a small, black on black, shimmery, animal- looking, contemporary print. There was a black baby grand piano with chinese chinoisere (paintings around the outside edge in gold asian figures) in the room also. We could not move that and had to work around it. It was beautiful! The dining room and living room were one, so we had to do something with the whitewashed wood chairs at the dining table. I found the perfect fabric (deep maroon and gold multi-stripe) for them and returned within 3 days to pick up the 6 chairs.

Now we had to plan the window treatments! 3 arch top windows and 1 large rectangle in the dining room. I designed the treatment with black iron holders to follow the arch of the window top that would hold the tabs on the top of the drapery. The panels were tied back with cord and tassle ties in maroon and gold. Fabric was off white. We needed an area rug. I shopped local rug dealers and carried several to my clients (no time to waste)and we chose an asian looking one with off white background and several shades of burgundy and maroon. I had brought a small one for the entry also. I worked on the bedroom and family room. We hung pictures, placed a chinese puppet collection in a glassed front gun cabinet in the entry hall, borrowed the antique fishing tackle box from “his’ loft area to raise the height of a stool to put a lamp on. A layered look! We barely finished in 30 days! I twisted my workrooms arms to rush the window coverings. Also the upholsterer.

In 10 days the groom called me. He said” my wife keeps disappearing into the living room.” I asked her what she was doing and she said “It is so beautiful here, I just want to sit here and enjoy it!” (This is why I love this business! Decorating gives all of us, clients and me, such a thrill and a sense of fulfillment. I help people feel so pleased and happy on a daily basis. That is enough. Joan from www.DazzlingInteriorDesign.com

Hi everyone. I am giving you a tip about coloring/painting your walls and ceilings. When shopping for paint colors, always ask to see a color fan deck. Most companies have them, you just have to ask. You will notice that the deck is formatted so that the palest colors are at the outer tips as you fan the deck out. The colors decending to the lower center where the brad is holding them together, are the deepest color. If you want to vary color from one area to the next in your home or office, fan out the color deck and pick colors horizontally across all the pages the same distance from the top light edges down to your color. That way the tint, tone, or shade is the same intensity and your home’s colors flow from one room to the other without being abrupt and choppy. Don’t pick a very dark color in one room and a light color in the adjoining room. The home’s rooms feels choppy and unprofessional. Joan from DazzlingInteriorDesign.com

“IF YOU LIVE IN THE DUMPS, YOU WILL FEEL LIKE THE DUMPS! When we do not take care of our home environment, inside or out, our daily visual impressions reflect a “I am less than” feeling. Our homes reflect who we perceive we are. If you really want to lift your spirits, really see how special and unique you actually are you will commit the time and energy and even some funds to convert those areas in your home to neat, organized, colorful and comfortable areas. That focus says: “Yes, you are special” because someone, you, cared enough to improve what you see daily which creates an impression in your subconscious causing a feeling of happiness and appreciation. I have witnessed over and over my clients change of outlook and smiling appreciation daily when we have improved their interior. Even if you just clean, organize, and throw out clutter, it is amazing how such a simple thing can transform your mood. Try it for yourself. Joan from DazzlingInteriorDesign.com

Last week I spent one afternoon at my clients guest house making a paper pattern of her 175 inch wide arch for constructing a valance. She has an asian looking area rug , 10′ x 12′ with a dark navy background and coral and cream and light blue flowers on it. The great room swag valance will be solid coral with a small print tie-ups in dark coral and white. All the draperies are solid coral. The plan is for a very colorful retreat for guests. The bedroom has coral draperies with white embroidered sheers under. The bed covers are a custom quilt in dark navy/black background with asian medium blue and white pots on it and coral and white flowers. The tailored bed skirt is in a medium blue and white small print. We added a decorative coral pillow with special trim. My client and I chatted during all the time I was working on the ladder with the mailing paper, taping it up and drawing around the edge of the window where the light came through. I will make a wooden frame upon which to install the fabric, pulling it up to create 5 swags. I can’t wait to install it. Right now the great room is pure white walls. The coral will be so colorful with the dark blues in the area rugs. The color scheme started by using the owners existing 2 area rugs she had in storage. That is precicely one way to create the perfect color scheme. I broke the colors up into mostly corals with dark navy and blacks accents unevenly. 60% coral, 30 % black/navy 10 % medium blue. Never divide colors evenly. Our minds eye is satisfied when we know what the main color is, the 60%. Today I am off to Home Depot to pick up the plywood for the valance frame. Talk to you next time. Joan of DazzlingInteriorDesign.com

Isn’t that why we all work? Not ONLY for the money, but to serve people with your skills. I know you all have skills that other people need and want your input from. Don’t be selfish and keep them to yourselves. We all need you. Everyone can serve.

Hi everyone, I am currently still working with my client of 20 years. She wants to decorate her guest house now. We were looking at fabrics. She already has some dark almost black navy blue area rugs with coral and cream flowers. The style looks a little Asian. I found a print with a black background and coral touches with Asian pottery in med blue and white for a bedspread. It looks smashing with her area rugs. If you have items or a collection already that you prize, it is a great idea to co-ordinate other purchases to it and not ignore your collection. This helps to accent your special items. Coral curtains and embroidered white sheers complete the look. She is very happy. Joan at DazzlingInteriorDesign.com
